There are essentially two types of fencing: permanent structures including security fencing, mesh, gates and railings, and temporary style fencing such as steel hoardings, crowd control barriers, walkthrough areas and cycle barriers. Fencing keeps us in, keeps us out and keeps us safe.
A few years ago, it was reported that the UK fencing market was estimated to be worth over £1 billion, while around 60,000 people in the UK are employed by the installation companies alone. The figure is almost equally divided between materials and installation.
A permanent fence could be anything from a perimeter fence around a school, business park or farmland, or a security fence around property to a simple fence/railing around a playground or sports field. Nonetheless, fencing is a huge part of our daily lives – some would even call it street furniture as we find ways to shape, colour and blend it into society, where it provides an important role of aligning boundaries, protecting people and property while keeping us safe from hazards.
It may be obvious, but fences need to be secure, robust and weatherproof to withstand both short- and long-term exposure to the outside elements. We see fencing set up directly in concrete and earth, or sometimes they are freestanding, so the style of fencing varies depends on its use and purpose.
Something that is consistent is the material that the fencing is made from, mostly being steel, the ultimate material to work with; some might say the material of choice. You can shape it, bend it, fabricate it, and erect it for instant use.
As we all know, steel and “the elements” do not mix well, especially not in the long-term. As time passes, the elements will corrode the steel, making the material – or fencing in this case – weak, rusty, brittle, and eventually useless, so costs are incurred to replace and refit. The elements always win, but there is a tried and tested method that allows fencing to fight back.
This best way of combating corrosion and protecting your steel is by galvanizing it, something we at Corbetts have done for over 160 years. It is wise to think of galvanizing as a process and a long-term investment, which is basically adding a protective layer of zinc to the steel using the method of hot-dip galvanizing. It is this layer of zinc that protects your steel, as the parts are submerged in a bath of molten hot zinc at about 450°C (842°F) which is done post-fabrication. Once dipped and processed, the parts can be sent direct to site for installation, ready to be used for many, many years to come.

We also have the ability to double dip material up to a length of 14 metres, which is perfect for lengthy fence sections and enables us to accommodate for those large orders.
